From Digitized Worksheets to Digital Native Creations
Educational technologies can radically transform educational practices if teachers are willing to embrace the possibilities. However that transformation will be non-existent if teachers view educational technologies such as Google Apps for Education as ways for re-creating non-digital work in a digital environment. In this conversation, we will discuss strategies for creating digital native assignments. Starting with examples of typical assignments given to students, we will discuss digital possibilities and tools (such as Google Apps for Education, hyperlinks, embedding, and so on) to create similar activities that make full use of the web. Don’t just turn that handout into a Google Doc with tables. Make use of hyperlinks, embedded videos, drawings, digital collaboration and more! Let’s put our interdisciplinary minds together and create anew for our students!

Shades of 1:1 - What Models Work Best to Transform Classrooms
While some schools are able to reach the ratio of one student per device, it isn't always the ideal environment in which to learn and it . 1:1 status can create expectations that students are always on devices or it can allow for huge numbers of devices to go unused in the carts around a school. In this session we will explore all of the different ways of leveraging a 1:1 ratio as well as moving beyond a simple ratio to discuss the relationship between a student and a device that is far more advantageous to blended and personalized learning.

How does device access (and usage) change the way we plan lessons to create more engaging learning tasks? How does it support and empower students? If we haven't answered these questions, why should we hold a 1:1 ratio up as the ideal? In this session we will interrogate the notion of 1:1 and explore alternative ways of supporting Blended and Personalized Learning in our schools.

In this session, the presenters will take the participants through their experience of flipping the activity so that students set up breakouts as a culminating unit activity. The presenters will brainstorm with participants other areas and ideas for having students create breakout activities and will help participants begin to set up the activity to guide students through the process of creating their own breakout box activities. Demo Slam!
This high energy sharing of tools for learning will have your head spinning and your fingers whizzing across your device to get the details to download and explore. Sign up to participate. Each participant will have 3 minutes to WOW the audience.  Audience will vote, and prizes will be awarded!

First 10 people to sign up are in!  CLICK HERE to sign up!

Excerpted from Sylvia Duckworth's Blog:

Here are my top 10 tips for a winning Demo Slam.

  1. Choose something fairly easy to demonstrate. Nerves can trip you up if there are too many steps.
  2. Everyone loves a good story. Try to tell one during your Slam. String a few ideas together in a cohesive way.
  3. Be original. If you use a Demo Slam that people may have seen before, put a unique twist to it.
  4. Perform your Slam beforehand in front of your friends and ask for honest feedback and suggestions.
  5. Time your Slam while performing it out loud and make sure that it does not go over 3 minutes.
  6. Practice is key. Practice your Slam over and over again until you can do it without thinking.
  7. Trash talk the competition: they love it and the audience loves it, too.
  8. Play up the home court advantage if you have one. Remind the audience that you are from their home town and that they should vote for you.
  9. Play up the foreigner advantage if you have one. Throw in flattering comments about their city. Bonus: attempt to speak in their language if different from yours.
  10. It’s all about attitude. Try to exude confidence even if you are not feeling it.
